Following the retirement announcement of fellow Democratic Michigander Rep. Brenda Lawrence, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., announced on Wednesday that she will compete for the 12th congressional district instead of the 13th, Fox News informed.
Lawrence’s decision not to seek re-election coincides with the creation of a new district map, according to Tlaib, which sends most of Lawrence’s present constituents to the 12th district.
She went on to say that the division of her present constituents into other districts was “anticipated” in a tweet that accompanied the remark.
Tlaib, a member of the “Squad,” a far-left faction of House members, is presently completing her second term, having initially taken office in 2019.
Lawrence, who has served in the House of Representatives since 2015, is the 25th Democrat to announce his or her retirement, despite the party’s thin majority in the lower chamber.
According to FOX 2 in Detroit, she is the only Black member of Michigan’s congressional delegation.
