A year after a crowd of Trump supporters invaded the Capitol, Vice President Kamala Harris cautioned that the country is being put to the test, encouraging Americans to “unite in defense of our democracy,” The Hill reported.

In her speech, Harris frequently mentioned the democracy was fragile, stating that “the American spirit is being tested.”

She also added a demand on the Senate to enact voting rights laws that have been blocked, something she has promoted as part of her portfolio. On Tuesday in Georgia, Harris, and Biden are slated to give a more concentrated statement on voting rights.

Harris and President Biden commemorated the insurgency as part of a day of festivities planned by Democrats to honor one year after a pro-Trump crowd invaded the Capitol in an effort to prevent Biden’s 2020 win from being certified.

Harris recalls being in the Capitol on the morning of Jan. 6, 2021, for an intelligence briefing as a Senate member while still vice president-elect. She had fled the facility when it was stormed by a crowd, and she reappeared later that night as the results were being certified by parliamentarians.
