Tesla Recalls Nearly Half a Million Cars in US

Tesla is recalling more than 475,000 cars in the United States. The company, owned by Elon Musk — the richest man in the world — announced it was recalling some of the Model 3 Teslas due to a potential rear-view camera issue, as well as Model S vehicles because of potential problems with the front truck of the vehicle that would increase a crash risk.

The total recall figure nearly matches the amount of cars the company delivered last year, which was 500,000.

Safety reports were filed with a US safety regulator, and was submitted this month. Multiple Safety Recall reports were filed on the same day about the two models. It estimates that approximately one percent of the Model 3 cars have the defective mirror issue. Fourteen percent of the Model S’s are estimated to have trunk defects.

For the trunk defects, it means that the hood could open unexpectedly, which could lead to car crashes.

The company said that it did not know yet of any crashes or injuries due to the problem.

It is the second time one of Musk’s entities has been in the news this week. Earlier in the week, Musk came under vast criticism that his massive fleet of satellites are going to clog up space. SpaceX founder Elon Musk is planning 42,000 satellites for space, resulting in mass criticism that his company is taking up too much space. Musk rejected the criticism, and said that his network of 42,000 satellites can coexist with others, and that they will not dominate slots or radio frequencies.

This week, Musk also sold an additional $1.02 billion of Tesla stocks. This move takes him closer to his target of reducing his stake in the electric-car maker by 10 percent. Musk sold more than 900,000 shares so far according to a filing with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission.
