Despite Senator Joe Manchin’s open refusal of the idea, U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, a senior liberal House Democrat, has requested President Joe Biden to keep concentrating on his social spending bill called “Build Back Better” and pushed him to take effective measures, Reuters reported.
Jayapal, the head of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), stated in an editorial article in the Washington Post that the CPC will soon issue a plan for various activities such as cost-cutting, safeguarding family health, and combating climate change.
Last Sunday, Manchin, who is a conservative Democratic senator, voted against President Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” proposal, putting the bill in jeopardy.
As a result of Manchin’s actions, Goldman Sachs has lowered its economic growth estimates for the United States. With Manchin’s disapproval of the legislation, hundreds of billions of dollars in financing for climate change mitigation and meeting the Biden administration’s climate objectives might be jeopardized.
Manchin has voiced his opposition to a number of provisions in Biden’s major domestic policy plan, including various climate policies and the extension of month-to-month child tax credit payouts.
In a CBS News interview aired on Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris was asked about Manchin to which she responded that the stakes are too great for the matter to be about a particular person.
The White House, according to Harris, is not given up on the measure.
Manchin’s backing is critical in the Senate, where the Democrats hold the smallest majority and Republicans are unified in their opposition to the package. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has stated that a measure will be voted on at the beginning of next year.
On Wednesday, the White House stated that discussions with Manchin’s office will resume. On Tuesday, Biden claimed he and Manchin were “going to get something done” regarding the bill.
