US Endorsed Slovenian Bid for UN Security Council

Slovenia has won the United States’ endorsement for its effort to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2024-2025 and the candidacy pits it against Belarus which was prompt to stress that the Slovenian bid is an American effort.

After a meeting on Monday with Slovenian Foreign Minister Anže Logar, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has underscored that the US considers Slovenia a very suitable candidate for the UNSC post.

Slovenia as a country that upholds the rule of law, defends fundamental human rights, and is active in multilateralism, is considered by the US Department of State to be a credible voice contributing to the preservation of international peace and security that has offered the right set of reasons for support.

Despite Belarus’s claims that Slovenia submitted its candidacy at the behest of Washington, Slovenian Foreign Minister Logar stressed that his country will only focus on getting its own messages across.

FM Logar has expressed his hopes that this joint Slovenian project, which is at the beginning of its journey, will get as many votes as possible and will be as successful as possible in this year-and-a-half-long campaign, underscoring they also hope to get Russia’s endorsement.

Slovenian Delo newspaper also suggested, quoting unofficial sources, that Slovenian candidacy has actually been initiated by the US in an effort to get a candidate -a NATO member – that also has pragmatic relations with Alexander Lukashenko’s regime main sponsor – Russia.

Slovenia has formally announced its candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC for the 2024–2025 term in New York on December 9.

After the successful presidency of the Council of the EU, the candidature for the post in UNSC – the body with primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security-  is a follow-up to Slovenia’s active foreign policy.
