Trump Sues NY Attorney General to Stop Investigation into Company

Former President Donald Trump and his company the Trump Organization are suing New York Attorney General Letitia James in order to halt or limit ongoing investigations into the Trump company.

The lawsuit comes following a subpoena from the Attorney General’s office for Trump to provide testimony as part of the civil fraud lawsuit into his company. James set Jan. 7 as the deadline for his deposition. Trump’s lawyer, Ronald Fischetti, said that he planned to squash the subpoena.

Trump’s lawsuit against the Attorney General was filed in New York on Monday, and alleged James is guilty of misconduct and abuse of power. Trump’s suit accused James of misconduct and of abusing investigatory powers on a political bias and argues that James has exhibited for a long time a political bias against Trump.

The suit aims to stop James from continuing with the long-running civil investigation into his businesses, as well as stop her from participating in another separate parallel criminal investigation.

James’ office was quick to respond to Trump’s lawsuit, saying that the Trump Organization continues to try and delay the investigation into business dealings. This suit, they said, is an “attempted collateral attack.”

James’ office is investigating whether the former president’s company, the Trump Organization, manipulated the value of its properties. This includes properties such as hotels, golf courses, and condo buildings.

A parallel criminal investigation is also being launched into the Trump Organization by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. Lawyers from the New York attorney general’s office are also working on this separate investigation.

No one is above the law, not even Trump, James said in a statement. James said that the lawsuit will not be deterring her inquiry.

Trump’s lawsuit is not expected to go very far, as his lawyers face a high bar in proving that James violated Trump’s rights.
