Biden Warns of Winter of ‘Severe Illness and Death’ for Unvaccinated

President Joe Biden warned Americans on Thursday that people who choose to be unvaccinated are in for a bad winter.

Biden said that those not receiving their vaccinations, and soon, will be exposed to a bleak and dangerous winter of severe illness and death.

The president said that the newest Covid variant, Omicron, is in the United States and is spreading, and that it will continue to spread throughout the winter especially if swaths of the public remain unvaccinated.

He also stated that vaccinations will help to protect economic recovery and will be good for the U.S. economy overall. Vaccinations will help keep both schools and businesses open, he said.

Booster shots are currently being widely encouraged across America, with public health officials and experts urging people to get their booster shot in order to prevent serious illness to Covid, especially hospitalization or death.

Currently it is estimated that only one in six Americans are fully vaccinated and boosted. Experts are saying that without a wider vaccination rate and booster rate, especially for the vulnerable, hundreds of millions are at risk.

The Omicron variant is fast-transmitting according to preliminary studies. It still remains unclear how deadly the variant is, and how much vaccines prevent infection. Recent studies have shown, however, that booster shots of the vaccination provide a good prevention rate against Omicron.

This week the U.S. passed a grim milestone with 800,000 Covid-related deaths. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that a winter surge is feared, that could potentially lead to record levels of hospital admissions.

Top disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Thursday that he is certain the newest strain will become the dominant variant soon. He cited that Omicron infections are doubling numbers in only three days at a time, and therefore the U.S. will soon see Omicron take over the Delta variant as the most transmittable strain.
