Two months after the 400 Mawozo gang kidnapped 17 US and Canadian missionaries in Port-au-Prince in Haiti and demanded a $17 million ransom, the 12 remaining members of a Christian missionary group were released on Wednesday.

The details of the release are still unclear.

Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministries said on Thursday that the released missionaries are now safe and in good health, promising to provide more information as available.

The release comes after five of the abducted missionaries had previously been released – two of them in November and an additional three were let go earlier this month.

Wilson Joseph, the leader of the 400 Mawozo gang which oversees the Ganthier, a commune in Port-au-Prince suburb previously said in a video that he would kill the missionaries if his ransom demands aren’t met.

In addition to the video, the gang had reportedly presented the US with proof of life for all hostages when demanding the ransom for the missionaries that were taken as hostages in October while leaving an orphanage and traveling to the Port-au-Prince airport.

Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July, Haiti has been plagued by worsening violence and a spike in kidnappings.
