More Lawsuits Filed Against Tesla for Sexual Harassment

Multiple women have filed lawsuits against Tesla alleging sexual harassment. Six more women who work at the plant in Fremont, California filed suits against the company.

It comes a month after another suit accused the factory of “rampant sexual harassment.” Following that suit, made by two women together, half a dozen current and former employees have come forward echoing similar allegations of harassment.

Each woman filed a separate lawsuit in the California Superior Court, stating that they have been made subject to a rampant culture of workplace sexual harassment. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been directly named as a culprit.

The six latest lawsuits claim that male coworkers make frequent lewd comments on their bodies as well as clothing, and engage in abusive behavior, such as catcalling, harassment, groping, inappropriate and unwelcome touching, and advances.

The lawsuits accuse the HR department of grossly failing to take action. One woman, Jessica Brooks, said that she notified the human resources department of the massive issues women were facing in the Tesla workplace, but all they did was relocate her to a different work area and failed to take any actual action.

Another woman who alerted HR had the same lack of response and said that the department did not address the abuse and behavior, but instead just merely moved the women around in the factory.

Other women did not feel confident in bringing the issues to HR because they said it was their managers who were participating in abusive behavior and harassment.

The sexist culture has made several women quit, or take leave.

Musk’s sexist public statements and social media comments have been partially to blame for setting the tone. Musk tweets out lied comments taunt employees who report misconduct and belittle sexism and sexual harassment, say experts.

An attorney representing the six women, David A. Lowe, said that Musk’s social media comments reflect an attitude at the top of Tesla that ultimately enables patterns of consistent, pervasive sexual harassment, which is at the heart of each of the several lawsuits.
