President Joe Biden has pledged additional military capabilities for NATO’s easternmost members during Thursday’s talks with leaders of the central European members of the Alliance and promised to involve them in decision making about the region, Lithuanian presidential adviser Asta Skaisgiryte said.
Biden held phone talks which lasted around 45 minutes with the leaders of the Bucharest Nine group, which brings together Eastern European countries, including Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Bulgaria.
According to Skaisgiryte, Lithuania’s president’s foreign policy adviser, Biden has not elaborated on exact details or the possible location of the additional NATO military buildup.
The Bucharest Nine leaders were also briefed on his talks – which largely revolved around Ukraine – with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Biden assured them he’d never make any deals involving the eastern European countries behind their backs.
The White House has not shed any light so far on the potential additional military capabilities for NATO’s eastern members, releasing only a brief readout of the talks in which they’ve underscored the US commitment to Transatlantic security and to the Article 5 collective defense provision of the NATO charter
The provision states that any armed attack against one member shall be considered an attack on them all.
The White House informed that Biden also spoke to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reaffirmed during the conversation the unwavering commitment of the United States to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
