LUNCHTIME POLITICS: Biden vs. Trump – Roe – Handling of Issues by Party

Your Daily Polling Update for Wednesday, December 8

BIDEN JOB APPROVAL: AVERAGE 44%
Up 2 since Saturday

RON’S COMMENT: Today’s average is based on four polls, ranging from 42% (Rasmussen) to 46% (Reuters). Biden’s disapproval rating averages 50% today (down 3 from Saturday), putting him at 6 points net negative.

PRESIDENT: 2024
Among voters nationwide

Wall Street Journal poll:
Biden over Trump: +1 (46-45)

Harvard CAPA/Harris poll:
Trump over Biden: +3 (48-45)

RON’S COMMENT: Two polls show a Biden-Trump race would be a close contest. That’s bad news for Democrats; Biden’s position has weakened since he beat Trump 51-47 last year. It’s also potentially bad news for Republicans––given Biden’s current troubles and underwater poll ratings, the GOP should have a candidate who would be doing better at this point…. The Harvard poll also finds that “the number of voters who believe the U.S. economy is heading in the wrong direction ticked upward from 57 percent in October to 59 percent in November, while those who say it’s on the right track dipped from 34 percent to 32 percent.”

Presidential policy preference, Biden vs. Trump: Regardless of how you may feel personally about each man, would you rather continue pursuing Joe Biden’s policies and proposals or return to Donald Trump’s policies and proposals?

Return to Trump’s Policies and Proposals: 48%
Continue Biden’s Policies and Proposals: 46%

RON’S COMMENT: Trump’s policies edge Biden’s policies by 2 points, even though Biden led Trump by 1 point in the same poll’s trial heat for president (see above). This result is from the new WSJ poll.

GEORGIA: GOVERNOR 2022
Among Republican primary voters statewide

REPUBLICAN PRIMARY FOR GOVERNOR

If the Republican Primary for Governor of Georgia were held today for whom would you vote?

Gov. Brian Kemp: 41%
David Perdue: 22%
Vernon Jones: 11%
Kandiss Taylor: 4%
Undecided: 22%

As you may have heard, President Trump is planning to endorse David Perdue in the Republican Primary for Governor. Knowing this information how would you vote?

Gov. Brian Kemp: 34%
David Perdue: 34%
Vernon Jones: 10%
Kandiss Taylor: 4%
Undecided: 18%

RON’S COMMENT: In a clean trial heat, incumbent GOP Gov. Brian Kemp leads former GOP Sen. David Perdue by 19 points. But when it is pointed out that Perdue will have Trump’s endorsement, Kemp’s lead vanishes…. Former state legislator Jones pulls a substantial chunk of votes; he’s an African American Trump supporter.

  • BUCKHEAD: This poll finds that 50% of Republican primary voters statewide would more likely support and 10% would more likely oppose a gubernatorial candidate who favors allowing residents in Buckhead to decide if they want to remain in Atlanta or create their new city

ROE VS. WADE
Among voters nationwide

The new Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey finds that:

  • 54% say they oppose overturning Roe v. Wade
  • 46% say they favor repealing Roe v. Wade

The poll also finds that:

  • 38% say the Court should affirm Roe v. Wade.
  • 32% favor repealing Roe v. Wade entirely and leaving abortion laws up to the states.
  • 24% favor reducing the time to have an abortion from 24 weeks of pregnancy to 15 weeks
  • 8% favor extending the time to have an abortion to 36 weeks.

PARTIES BEST ABLE TO HANDLE KEY ISSUES

Between the Democrats in Congress and the Republicans in Congress, who in your opinion handle each of the following issues? If you think they are both equally able to handle an issue, or is BEST ABLE to neither is, just say so.

Neither party: Issues where a substantial part of the electorate say “neither” party is able to handle each issue––

  • Control federal spending: 27%
  • Reduce the deficit: 22%
  • Get the pandemic under control: 22%
  • Fix the immigration system: 20%
  • Secure the border: 19%
  • Make the tax system more fair: 19%
  • Hold the line on taxes: 18%
  • Improve education: 18%
  • Look out for middle class families: 18%

RON’S COMMENT: Republicans win a range of issues by big margins (border, taxes, crime, inflation, China) as do Democrats (healthcare, pandemic, prescription drugs, Social Security and Medicare)…. On 9 important issues, roughly one in five voters or more say neither party is able to handle…. It should be noted that 20% of the electorate is equivalent to about 32 million votes in a presidential election.
