Increased tensions between the US and the Islamic Republic are additionally fueled amid stalled talks on reviving JCPOA, Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers that curtails Tehran’s uranium enrichment programme in exchange for a lifting of global sanctions.

Former President Trump withdrew the United States from the deal in 2018 and reimposed US sanctions on Iran, prompting Iranian authorities to breach various limits set by the deal.

Despite the renewed efforts to revive the deal, Iran’s top security official Ali Shamkhani stressed on Wednesday the talks would fail unless President Biden guarantees that Washington will not renege on the nuclear agreement in the future.

Shamkhani blamed the stalling in negotiations on Biden’s lack authority and hesitation to give guarantees, creating the current status quo.
