Netflix Launches Mobile Games

Netflix no longer wants you to think of only television and movies when you hear its name. Next up: Netflix Games.

Netflix Games is being rolled out globally today, with some of its mobile video games coming to Android users today.

The move pushes the streaming giant into a new realm of business, as part of its way to find additional revenue streams and keep its subscribers.

Subscribers can choose from five games on the app: Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3: The Game, Shooting Hoops, Card Blast, and Teeter Up.

The games landed on Android phones on Tuesday, and will become available for Apple products later. They’re available for those with a Netflix subscription through an additional app called Netflix Games. The games are included for free with subscription, and will not include advertisements or in-app purchase.

Starting November 3, the games will be in its original app, with a new tab and row dedicated to games.

Mobile games have been in development for Netflix for a while. In a 2019 shareholder letter, the company identified the game ‘Fortnite’ as a competitor, leading its shareholders to realize gaming was very much likely in Netflix’s future.

A few months ago, Netflix hired video-game executive Mike Verdu from Facebook, showing the company’s push into gaming. While at Facebook, Verdu was the vice president of augmented reality and virtual reality content. Before that, he worked at gaming companies, making him quite the hire for the company as it looks to become not only a streaming giant, but a gaming giant too.

Netflix has made clear it wants to go beyond television and movies for its 200 million subscribers. Online gaming is becoming more competitive. Netflix isn’t the only site to be investing in gaming; Amazon, Google and Microsoft are all getting into the game too.
