Billionaire Elon Musk said he’ll immediately sell Tesla stock and donate the proceeds to solve world hunger if the United Nation’s World Food Program (WFP) can prove that $6 billion will deal with the problem and publishes their precise spending plan, CNN reports.
However, Musk added in his offer that it must be open source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent.
His comments, published on Twitter, came as reaction to UNWFP director David Beasley’s challenge to the ultra-wealthy – the world’s two richest men Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk in particular- to step up and solve world hunger on a one-time basis.
The sum of $6 billion that he argued it would prevent the death of 42 million people equates to roughly 2% of Musk’s net wealth.
Responding to Musk’s tweet, WFP chief Beasley stressed that the sum he mentioned may not solve world hunger, but it WILL prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and will save 42 million people on the brink of starvation.
On top of that, as Beasley noted, it can bring hope, build stability and change the future, assuring Musk that WFP has in place transparency and open-source accounting systems, also suggesting joint work of their teams to review the matter.
Repeating his call to US billionaires for funding, the WFP chief reiterated that he’s only asking 0.36% of their net-worth increase, that was $1.8 trillion in the past year.
According to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index, Musk’s net worth is $311 billion as of Monday, making him the richest man in the world, while his company Tesla became last week the sixth company in US history to be worth $1 trillion.
