A video of controversial conservative lawyer John Eastman has emerged where he criticized state election officials for upholding the results of the 2020 elections, and called Republicans “spineless” for not overturning the result.
Eastman was a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump.
On the night before the Jan. 6 insurrection on the Capitol, there was a “war room” at the Willard Hotel filled with Trump lawyers and allies, including Rudy Giuliani, Steve Bannon, Jason Miller and others. They were allegedly laying out a strategy for how to overturn the 2020 election results.
According to reports, Eastman had drafted a memo suggesting that an alternative slate of electors be used as a tactic to stop the certification of the election results.
The memo urged Vice President Pence to move the election to the House of Representatives, which was Republican-dominated at the time, in order to block the election and overturn the results.
Pence reportedly declined to go along with the plan, but only because there were no alternative slates of electors.
In the newly emerged video, Eastman approached Trump at an event at the Claremont Institute, a right-wing think tank where Eastman works. Eastman is heard calling Republicans “spineless” for not helping with his plan to overturn the election, and claims he could have gotten the decertification.
He claimed that he and Giuliani met with 300 legislators on Jan. 2 via a Zoom call to urge them to commit to the election overturn plan, but that they would not do anything.
In the video, Eastman also blamed Pence for not acting on the memo, saying he was “floored” Pence didn’t do anything.
Eastman also discussed that Trump was planning to attend the Jan. 6 insurrection, but only abstained because the situation escalated and the violent actions would have been damaging. The latest video is a scathing indictment of the Trump team’s attempts to overthrow the election.
