Mayorkas Tests Positive for Covid-19 Days after Meeting with Maskless Biden

Just days after attending an outdoor event with President Biden, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday morning after going through routine pre-travel protocols since was supposed to travel to Colombia with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Fox News reports.

DHS spokesperson Marsha Espinosa said that contact tracing was underway after Mayorkas, who was fully vaccinated, tested positive, informing that he’s experiencing only mild congestion and will isolate and work at home in line with CDC protocols and medical advice.

Although Covid-19 breakthrough cases are rare among fully vaccinated people, they can still happen since no jab is 100% effective, but result in much lower rates of serious illness, hospitalization and death.

According to the White House, no White House principal had been in close contact with Secretary Mayorkas inside the 48-hour close contact window, but Mayorkas attended on Saturday the 40th Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service at the US Capitol alongside President Biden.

Images from the event show Mayorkas standing close to President Biden, first lady and FBI Director Christopher Wray without masks during the outdoor event.

Mayorkas, the first Cabinet secretary in the Biden administration to test positive, has been in the spotlight in recent months for the handling of the migrant crisis at the southern border where Biden administration has limited the use of Title 42 and where over 200,000 migrants were encountered in July and August.
