Several sources related to the Russian defense-industrial complex suggested that Saudi authorities are showing interest in the Russian Abakan anti-aircraft missile system – the world’s first specialized system for combating high-speed high-altitude targets with ballistic trajectories.

At the same time, “Abakan” can replace the American air defense system “Patriot” in the Saudi army, as well, Russian media reported.

Several preliminary consultations and negotiations have already taken place between representatives of Moscow and Riyadh on the possibility of acquiring the Abakan air defense system.

This anti-aircraft missile system – under its specialization – will be able to remove almost all the Kingdom’s concerns in the field of defense against tactical and operational-tactical ballistic missiles. Saudi Arabia is regularly bombarded with tactical ballistic missiles by the Houthis, a militarized Shiite-Zaidi group operating in Yemen.

The documents for “Abakan” – an advertising passport and an export passport – are already ready. At the upcoming International Military-Technical Forum “Army-2021”, which will be held on August 22-28 in the Moscow region, the Abakan air defense missile system will be presented in full force for the first time.
