US Sectoral Sanctions on Minsk Still Unconfirmed, Belarusian Opposition Leader Tikhanovskaya Says

Exiled Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who has been in the United States for more than a week for high-level meetings with Biden’s administration officials, is still not sure if the US will impose sectoral sanctions on Minsk, pointing that it’s hard to receive any promises during consultations.

She noted that the sectoral sanctions were not discussed this time, but hopes that US will soon react and impose them.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the US administration is considering a new round of economic sanctions against Belarus and its leader Alexander Lukashenko, but State Department spokesman Ned Price declined to discuss specific US actions.

Another senior official from the Biden administration pointed that no specific actions will be announced at the moment but pointed that the United States still holds the regime in Ukraine accountable for its actions, including by imposing sanctions.

According to Frank Vyachorka, Tikhonovskaya’s adviser, State Department officials expressed their intention to introduce new sanctions that will affect the oil and potash sectors, which are close to Lukashenko and are important parts of Minsk’s economy.

Tikhanovskaya believes that any US action that represents condemnation from Washington would be impactful.
