A White House official and a staffer for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi – both vaccinated – caught Covid-19 and are exhibiting mild symptoms after spending time with several Texas Democrats who escaped to Washington to block the Texas legislature from changing the state’s voting laws.
Six of 50 Texas Democrats, despite being fully vaccinated, have so far has tested positive for Covid-19.
A White House official said in a statement that fully vaccinated White House official tested positive for COVID-19 off campus yesterday presenting only mild symptoms. He noted that The White House Medical Unit has conducted contact tracing interviews and determined no close contacts among White House principals and staff.
Nancy Pelosi ‘s spokesman, Drew Hammill, also informed that a fully vaccinated senior spokesperson in the speaker’s press office presented with Covid-19 symptoms after contact with members of the Texas state legislature last week, prompting the entire office to work remotely.
The White House said there had been “no close contact” between the official and President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris, who had previously met with the Texas Democrat delegation, but her own test over the weekend came back negative and she said she would not be quarantining.
The attending physician of the Capitol, Dr. Brian Monahan, has confirmed that several fully vaccinated congressional staff and one member of Congress – Rep. Vern Buchanan- have become infected with the coronavirus, blaming the more contagious Delta variant of the virus.
They illustrate how fully vaccinated Americans can still contract and transmit the virus even at the highest levels of the nation’s government.
