Four Russian warplanes had been scrambled on Thursday to escort three American В-52Н bombers, spotted near the Russian border, over the Bering Sea in the country’s far east, Newsweek cites the Russian military as tensions between Moscow and Washington continue to ramp up.
Russian Defence Ministry added that it sent MiG-31 and Su-35 fighters to accompany the U.S. Air Force’s strategic bombers after the Russian airspace control devices detected three air targets approaching the Russia’s airspace over the neutral waters of the Bering Sea.
Russian defense ministry said in a statement three air targets were detected over the neutral waters of the Bering Sea approaching the state border of the Russian Federation, but that illegal entrance into the country’s airspace was prevented by two pairs of MiG-31 and Su-35 fighters that took off from the Eastern Military District.
Indicating that the flight of their fighters “was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace,” the Russian military authorities informed that Russian planes landed safely at their home airfields after the US strategic bombers moved away from the border.
Russia has repeatedly reported the escalating activity of NATO aircraft near its borders over the past few years, warning that such actions near the country’s territory might result in incidents.
