SENATE: ALASKA 2022
Among voters statewide
NONPARTISAN BLANKET PRIMARY
Kelly Tshibaka (R): 39%
Al Gross (D): 25%
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R): 19%
John Wayne Howe (Ind): 4%
Undecided: 12%
RON’S COMMENT: Alaska has a new nonpartisan blanket primary with a ranked-choice voting system. On the first-choice ballot, GOP incumbent Murkowski is running a weak third in this poll.
- Only 26% of voters in Alaska rate Murkowski favorably, while 59% rate her unfavorably. Democrats rate her much better than do her fellow Republicans. Among Democrats, she’s 48% favorable/32% unfavorable. Among Republicans, she’s 6% favorable/84% unfavorable. (That’s not a misprint, she’s only 6% favorable among Republicans).
- Trump has endorsed Tshibaka and said he will campaign against Murkowski (who was censured by the state GOP for her vote to impeach Trump).
- Murkowski became a senator in 2002 when she was appointed by her father, Frank, to fill his own vacancy after he was elected governor. In 2010, she lost the Republican primary in her re-election bid, but won the general election as a write-in.
- Tshibaka is a former commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration.
- Gross lost a 2020 senate race and is the son of former state AG Avrum Gross.
- Handicappers rate the race solid or safe Republican.
