Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld Passes Away

Former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who led the department twice in his career, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88.

According to Rumsfeld’s family, the former diplomat passed away in New Mexico. He did not live to see his 89th birthday, which was due just in a few days. The cause of death was not specified by his family.

Donald Rumsfeld was born in Chicago in 1932. During his career, he headed the Pentagon twice – in 1975-1977 in the administration of Gerald Ford and then from 2001 to 2006 under George W. Bush.

Rumsfeld began his career in the US Navy, but then went into politics and worked in the US Congress. He ended his career as Secretary of Defense, amid a scandal surrounding the torture of prisoners in US prisons around the world.
