They say there’s no second chance for first impression and that’s something U.S. President Joe Biden might remember after violating royal protocol arriving late to a G7 dinner reception in the UK.
Biden and the First Lady arrived five minutes after the Queen got there with Prince Charles and the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge, though the faux pas by the U.S. president allegedly didn’t affect the meeting, the Daily Mail has reported.
According to Debrett’s, a leading authority on royal etiquette the newspaper quoted, the protocol states that all guests must arrive at the venue before royals and no guest should leave an event before senior members of the Royal Family and their staff.
Both Biden’s predecessors Donald Trump and Barack Obama also violated royal protocok when meeting members of the British Royal Family with Trump and Melania shaking hands with Queen Elizabeth II and her late husband Prince Philip and Obama making speech over the UK’s national anthem.
Biden is the 13th sitting U.S. president Queen Elizabeth II meet with during her 69-year reign. She has met every U.S. president since Dwight Eisenhower except for Lyndon B Johnson, who did not visit the UK while in office.
