Del Toro to Be Nominated Navy Secretary

Biden administration’s nominee for the long-vacant top job in the Department of the Navy is Navy veteran and tech solutions company CEO born in Cuba, Politico learns.

According to two sources with direct knowledge the outlet quoted, President Joe Biden’s plans to tap Carlos Del Toro as SECNAV and second Latino person to serve on that position are to be officially announced on Friday.

Del Toro, who is also president of the White House Fellows Foundation, was considered for the job by the White House since at least April. Several other candidates were also considered for the post, including former Texas state legislator Juan Garcia, former Navy Undersecretary Janine Davidson and former Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, but last two withdrew from consideration.

Del Toro’s nomination is the third and final of Biden’s picks for civilian service secretary posts after making Christine Wormuth the first woman to hold the post Army secretary and the Senate Armed Services Committee approved Frank Kendall as Air Force secretary though he still awaits confirmation from the full Senate.
