Former Virginia Senator John Warner Dead at 94

Former Republican Senator John W. Warner of Virginia, a former Navy secretary and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has died of heart failure at age of 94 at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife and daughter at his side, Fox News reports.

Senator Tim Kaine said that Virginia has lost an unmatched leader, and his family has lost a dear friend.

Warner was elected to the Senate in 1978 and served five terms before announcing in 2007 that he would not run again in 2008. He also served as the secretary of the Navy from 1972 to 1974 and in the Senate from 1979 to 2009.

Warner served in World War II and the Korean War before becoming Navy secretary.

He was also the sixth of Elizabeth Taylor’s seven husbands. The two were married from 1976 to 1982, before Warner was elected to the Senate. Warner is the last Republican from Virginia to have been a U.S. senator.
