U.S. President Supports the Ceasefire in Gaza in Call with Israeli PM

Faced with mounting pressure of its own party regarding the intensifying violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza that have entered the second week, President Joe Biden voiced support for a ceasefire during a telephone call with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, CNN quotes White House’s description of the call.

It’s a first time that White House officially mentioned a ceasefire to contain the situation, although it refrained of demanding complete cessation of violence as part of US engagement with Egypt and other partners towards that end.

According to senior administration official quoted by CNN, Biden is still not explicitly calling for a ceasefire but a diplomatic way to end the conflict by encouraging a halt to hostilities.

During the call with Netanyahu, U.S. president also reiterated his support for Israel’s right to defend itself while encouraging it to ensure the protection of innocent civilians considering the amount of civilian deaths is causing worry inside the White House.

Claiming that US is implementing quiet and intensive diplomacy to bring the violence to an end, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday that everything that the US is doing is with the objective of reducing the violence and bring an end to the conflict on the ground.
