Republican Party officials in Arizona’s largest county escalated on Monday its defense regarding their handling of the 2020 election, Politico reports.
Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, dominated by GOP, called the audit out of the control sham of the state Senate President Karen Fann leader who, while overseeing it, is attempting to legitimatize a grift disguised as an audit.
Maricopa County was a longtime Republican stronghold that was won by Democrat Joe Biden last year.
When Trump accredited his election loss on fraud, Fann took possession of ballots and voting machines, using the Senate’s subpoena power, and sent them for an audit to Cyber Ninjas in Florida, cybersecurity firm owned by a Trump supporter.
Then, last week she sent a letter questioning records that document the chain of custody of the ballots and accusing county officials of deleting data with the Board refuting the allegations of wrongdoing and pointing to Fann’s lack of understanding of election procedures and Cyber Ninjas’ incompetence
During a public meeting held to refute Fann’s allegations, Board Chair Jack Sellers noted that they can’t find the files because they don’t know what they’re doing, pointing at the same time that they wouldn’t be asked to do this on-the-job training if qualified auditors had been hired to do the work.
Fann, who defended the audit as an effort to resolve concerns regarding the manner in which election was conducted, did not immediately comment.
