Capito Supports for Better Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

The key Republican on infrastructure issues, Sen. Shelly Moore Capito (W.Va.) expressed her will to work with Democrats on electric vehicle infrastructure, but on the other hand, she didn’t agree with the scope and size of the yet-to be proposed White House infrastructure package, reported The Hill.

The top GOP senator on the Environment and Public Works Committee mentioned in an interview with The Hill that Republicans will support working in areas like building electric vehicle stations.

“As we see GM and others pledge to be all-electric by a certain date, we need to have the infrastructure in place,” said Capito.

She pointed that this could not be just a federal government effort and that “states, counties, cities and [the] private sector need to … contribute.”

Capito said that the approach that Republicans have on the matter may be different from those Democrats have, saying that they will focus on market stimulation.

“I’m not sure that we’ll agree on the size and scope of electric vehicle infrastructure. There’s always a tendency, I think, on the other side to just have the federal government take the whole over and I don’t think that’s going to be necessary because I think market forces to drive the development of this,” Capito said.

She also added that she would support “not just full-out providing but some kind of tax incentives or some kind of credits.”

Capito’s comments are in the timeline with the announcement from the White House for proposing a $3 trillion bill on infrastructure and other issues.

“How do you get to $3 trillion on what I consider traditional infrastructure? It includes rebuilding our schools, rebuilding housing. I mean, these are not traditional infrastructure reauthorizations as we have done them in the past,” she said.
