GOP Rep Tom Reed Apologizes for Sexual Harassment, Doesn’t Step Down

On Sunday, Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y) gave an apology to the former lobbyist Nicolette Davis who accused him for sexual harassment several years ago, and he also said that he won’t run for any elected office in 2022, reported The Hill.

Reed made the statement after Davis, who is now an Army second lieutenant, in a story published on Friday in The Washington Post made a confession how Reed had sexually harassed her several years ago.

According to Davis’s story, the event happened four years ago in an Irish bar in Minnesota while she was working as a lobbyist where, as she told the Post, Reed rubbed her back and thigh, and also unhooked her bra.

Reed’s statement started with the apology to Davis, as said “Even though I am only hearing of this matter as stated by Ms. Davis in the article now, I hear her voice and will not dismiss her.”

“In reflection, my personal deception of this event is irrelevant. Simply put, my behavior caused her pain, showed her disrespect, and was unprofessional. I was wrong. I am sorry, and I take full responsibility,” said Reed.

According to Reed, the incident occurred in a period when he had problems related to alcohol, and he is in a recovery process the last four years.

“This is in no way an excuse for anything I’ve done. Consistent with my recovery, I publicly take ownership of my past actions, offer this amend and humbly apologize again to Ms. Davis, my wife and kids, loved ones, and to all of you,” he said.

The accusations against Reed came after he mentioned on Fox News that he may consider running against N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo , who is also under investigation for sexual misconduct accusations from several women. In his decision not to run for any elected office, Reed cited a previous vow he made, that he would only serve six terms.
