Trump Administration Accused of Neglect over COVID Response

President Trump and administration officials were accused this week of “dangerous criminal neglect” over their response to the COVID – 19 crisis, by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.). Omar said that they deserve direct blame for the death of more than 300,000 people in the U.S. from COVID-19, including her father, reported The Hill.

The vocal critic of Trump appeared on Thursday on MSNBC, and Omar reflected the death of her father in June from coronavirus complications, blaming the President for his handling of the crisis, and calling officials to “investigate and prosecute the people responsible.”

“My dad was in Kenya. He came back to the United States when COVID hit because he thought he was good to be safer here. And I know that my father and over 300,000 other people have lost their lives to COVID because of dangerous criminal neglect by Trump and his administration,” Omar said.

Omar said that she agrees with House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) who said “that it is not enough just for us to issue subpoenas.”

“We have to investigate and prosecute these people who are responsible for these reckless deaths,” added Omar.

Jeremy Slevin quoted Omar on Twitter December 18, 2020:

“My and over 300,000 people lost their lives because of dangerous criminal neglect by Trump and his administration. It is not enough to just issue subpoenas. We have to investigate and prosecute the people responsible.”

A commission similar to the one that investigated 9/11 terrorist attacks may be required to investigate the response to the coronavirus pandemic, said Clyburn for MSNBC on Thursday.

“My father should be here today. So many of our family members should be here today, and they’re not here with us because we had leaders who didn’t care about their lives,” continued Omar.

“It does not make sense that this is a reality in this country. This could have been avoided. It can be avoided. There are people who are responsible, and we cannot forget about that when the next administration is sworn in and they are in charge of what happens next,” she added.

A herd immunity strategy to respond to COVID-19 was mentioned in email communication of Trump’s administration, says a memo released by Clyburn on Wednesday who now serves as the chairman of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis.
