The Coronavirus pandemic shook the whole world as it took thousands of lives and is expected to devastate whole economic systems all over the globe. Every country that has been affected by this deadly virus, quarantined its people and closed entire businesses temporarily to stop spreading the disease even more.
Somewhere around 2.5 million people from all over the world have been infected by the disease and more than 167,000 lost their lives because of it, according by information by Johns Hopkins University.
However, some countries started to soften the measures they’ve took in order for the people to start living their normal lives little by little and the businesses to start making money again.
Due to this, on Monday, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus held a briefing in which he said:
‘’Trust us. The worst is yet ahead of us. Let’s prevent this tragedy. It’s a virus that many people still don’t understand.’’
Tedros’ comments come as President Donald Trump has ordered the halt of funding to WHO, citing missteps in how the organization dealt with the pandemic. The move is supported by some conservatives but was met with blowback from others, including business groups and Democrats. He also urged global solidarity and national unity in order to continue fighting the virus and help limit future deaths according to The Hill.
‘’The global community has to take the virus on as a common enemy for humanity in order to defy it. Please let’s consider those who are dying as individuals, they are not numbers or figures. Even one life is precious,’’ said Tedros.
He added that the new virus is a dangerous combination as he compared it to the Spanish flu outbreak from 1918.
‘’This is happening in a hundred years for the first time again, like the 1918 flu that killed up to 100 million people. But now we have technology, we can prevent that disaster, we can prevent that kind of crisis,’’ concluded Tedros.
