TRUMP JOB APPROVAL: AVERAGE 45%
Down 1 from Tuesday
RON’S COMMENT: Today’s average is based on seven polls, ranging from 42% (Reuters) to 47% (Rasmussen). Without these extremes, the average would still be 45%…. Trump’s disapproval rating averages 51% today (+1 from Tuesday), which is 6 points higher than his approval rating.
NATIONAL: PRESIDENT
Among voters nationwide
(Quinnipiac) Biden over Trump: +8 (49-41)
(Economist) Biden over Trump: +6 (48-42)
RON’S COMMENT: Biden holds meaningful leads in these new national polls…. As we noted earlier this week, it seems that Biden is doing better being out of the public eye and the political firing line…. In The Economist poll:
- Biden wins Democrats 89-5 and Trump wins Republicans 93-3 and independents 41-37. (The Quinnipiac poll shows Biden leading independents by 9 points, a good bit different from The Economist poll).
- Biden leads women by 17 points, while Trump leads men by 6 points.
- Trump wins whites 50-41 and Biden wins blacks 86-7 and Hispanics 49-30.
- Biden wins 19-29-year-olds by 8 points and voters 30-44-year-olds by 19 points. Trump and Biden roughly tie voters over 45.

RON’S COMMENT: The average of President Trump’s approval rating on handling the coronavirus situation continues to slip. The average we reported Sunday had it at 48%. Now it’s 45.6%, which is about the same as his overall job rating average (45%, see above)––we now have convergence of the two ratings.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND CORONAVIRUS

Do you think the federal government has done a good job or a poor job of preventing the spread of novel coronavirus, sometimes referred to as COVID-19, in the U.S.?
Good job: 41%
Poor job: 55%
RON’S COMMENT: Over the past month in this poll, the percentage saying “good job” has declined by 8 points…. 14% of Democrats, 38% of independents and 80% of Republicans say the federal government is doing a good job.
CUOMO, FAUCI, KUSHNER

Anthony Fauci: 65%/11%
Jared Kushner: 25%/46%
RON’S COMMENT: Among Democrats, New York Gov. Cuomo is 71% favorable/8% unfavorable; among Republicans, he’s 32% favorable/46% unfavorable; among independents, he’s 34% favorable/30% unfavorable…. It should be noted that job ratings for Cuomo and Fauci are usually higher when the poll question specifically asks about their job performance on the coronavirus situation, and not in general (as does this question).
CALIFORNIA: NEWSOM, TAXES
Among voters statewide
Newsom rating on coronavirus: Overall, do you strongly approve, somewhat approve, somewhat disapprove, or strongly disapprove of Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of the Coronavirus emergency?
Approve: 83%
Disapprove: 13%
RON’S COMMENT: First-term Gov. Newsom is receiving rave reviews from voters in the state on his handling of the coronavirus. 90% of Democrats, 75% of independents and even 72% of Republicans give this Democrat good marks.
Raise taxes: Some say California needs to raise taxes to fund services and relief efforts around coronavirus, and to shore up the state’s finances hurt by the economic crisis. Others say California doesn’t need to raise taxes right now, because it would hurt consumers, taxpayers, and the economy as we try to recover. Which comes closer to your point of view?
Raise taxes: 11%
Do NOT raise taxes: 80%
Not sure: 8%
RON’S COMMENT: Californians have no appetite for more taxes to shore up state finances. 77% of Democrats, 87% of Republicans and 83% of independents oppose more taxes.
THE ECONOMY

Excellent/good: 31%
Not so good/poor: 66%
RON’S COMMENT: Perceptions of the national economy, as you’d expect, are now decidedly negative. That’s a big change from only a month ago, when 66% of voters rated the economy excellent or good…. Currently, 58% of Republicans, 11% of Democrats and 30% of independents rate the economy excellent or good.
