LUNCHTIME POLITICS: Special Weekend Edition – Trump Handling of Coronavirus

Your Daily Polling Update for Sunday, April 5, 2020

TRUMP HANDLING OF CORONAVIRUS
Among adults and voters nationwide

Trump’s rating on handling coronavirus:
% = Approve/Disapprove
(ABC News): 47%/52%
(Grinnell): 49%/47%
(Reuters/Ipsos): 48%/46%

RON’S COMMENT: The three most recent national polls, conducted between March 30 and April 2, show President Trump’s approval rating on handling the coronavirus situation has dipped below 50%. This is a noticeable difference from the March 13-22 period, when we reported three polls showing Trump in majority territory––55%, 56%, 60%.

For a single poll trendline: The ABC News/Ipsos poll had him at 55% for March 18-19, 51% for March 22-25 and now at 47% for April 1-2––that’s an 8-point slide in two weeks.

There had been a bigger gap between Trump’s overall job rating and his coronavirus job rating, which was higher. But the most recent polling shows aconvergence trend of both.

Excerpts from the latest ABC poll:

  • 89% of Americans report being somewhat or very concerned about being infected by the coronavirus, up from 79% two weeks ago.
  • 91% report their regular routine changing because of the outbreak. Among those affected, a majority––56%––say they don’t expect to resume their regular routine until after July 1st.
