Coronavirus Closes NASA Center, Most Missions Canceled

An annual meeting of planetary scientists has been canceled due to Coronavirus sudden and fatal effects, and NASA has also instructed its approximately 1200 workers at California who were employed in the field center to work from home for some time. A major satellite industry in Washington is working in the same manner as planned.

NASA’s Ames Research Center will go to Mandatory telework status until the next notice. Many guidance will be followed for those who don’t have the equipment to work from home or others who work from labs.

On Sunday, March 8, it was confirmed that an Ames employee is tested positive for the Coronavirus. NASA asked its 17,000 employees to work from home. “Always the protection and care of our NASA team is the topmost priority,” NASA said. “As the coronavirus situation continues, NASA is taking various precautions to maintain the health of its employees.”

Other major space industries and conferences are also impacted and feared by the concerns of the Coronavirus. Officials organizing the 51st annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, which was to be held on March 16 in Woodlands, Texas, has also been canceled.

These difficult decisions have been made because of the risks of the virus, as confirmed by CDC (Centres for Disease Control) and WHO (World Health Organisation) with NASA PSD (Planetary Science Division) and all others.

A meeting of NASA Advisory Council has been changed to ‘virtual-only’ due to coronavirus concerns. The meeting was decided to hold in-person at NASA headquarters, Washington.

Some companies canceled their participation in the Satellite 2020 conference. SES and One Web- two satellite operators also denied sending their employees to the conference. The company said Steve Collar, its CEO, would attend the conference to respect his commitments.
