President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial experienced a disruption on Wednesday when a protestor had to be removed for shouting from the Senate’s public gallery.
The interruption came as House Manager Hakeem Jeffries delivered his opening argument, with the protestor yelling from the balcony. Chief Justice John Roberts, who was overseeing the trial, banged the gavel and asked the sergeant-at-arms to restore order and escort the protester from the Senate.
The man was yelling on the third floor of the Capitol a series of abortion and impeachment-related phrases including “dismiss the charges”, “impeachment”, “abortion”, while also calling Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer “the devil”.
The disruption came more than five hours after the impeachment trial started on Wednesday. House managers are currently making their arguments in support of convicting and removing Trump from office.
Democratic Representative Jason Crow was speaking on the floor describing President Trump’s July 25 phone call where he asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to help investigate former Vice President Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
“There will be order. The sergeant at arms will restore order in the gallery,” Chief Justice John Roberts said.
