One of Trump’s most vocal supporters, Senator Lindsey Graham, appeared in an interview on Axios on HBO where he claimed that he was very open-minded about backing impeachment.
“Sure, I mean show me something that is a crime. If you could show me that, you know, Trump actually was engaging in a quid pro quo outside the phone call, that would be very disturbing,” Graham said.
House Democrats launched a formal impeachment inquiry into the President last month following a complaint filed by an anonymous whistleblower to the intelligence community inspector general (ICIG) regarding a phone call between Trump and Ukraine’s Zelensky.
The whistleblower alleges that Trump “sought to pressure” Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky “to take actions to help the President’s 2020 reelection bid” during the July 25 phone call by asking him to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading Democratic contender, The Hill reported.
Graham maintained in the new interview, however, that he has “read the transcript of the Ukrainian phone call” and he does not believe there was a “quid pro quo.”
However, Graham also said that he thought it was “stupid” for Trump to later ask China to investigate the former vice president and his son, Hunter, both of whom have not yet been found to have committed actions of wrongdoing in Ukraine.
“As to asking China to look into Biden — that was stupid. Nobody believes that China would be fair to Biden, Trump, me or you, or anybody. Bad idea,” the senator said.
“That didn’t last very long. I think that’s a frustrated Trump who feels like there’s two different games, that people in your business are never gonna really sit down and talk to Hunter Biden unless it’s a softball interview,” he added.
