CHINA AND TRADE

Do you approve or disapprove of the administration’s decision to increase tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods from 10% to 25% in response to China backtracking on a trade deal between the two countries?
Approve: 53%
Disapprove: 47%
RON’S COMMENT: A majority of voters favor the increased tariffs. But, the next question indicates that voters are evenly split on whether trade negotiations will help or hurt the economy.

Help economy: 43%
Hurt economy: 43%
No impact: 14%
RON’S COMMENT: To be clear, this question should have specified that “the economy” in question is the U.S. economy, since it refers to negotiations between two countries.
Should the United States target Chinese technology companies to punish China for trade infringements?

No, it should not: 43%
Should the United States forgive Chinese technology companies for their infringement of U.S. and international laws in exchange for concessions from China in our trade negotiations?
Yes: 34%

RON’S COMMENT: There is strong sentiment against forgiving Chinese companies for legal infringement, even in exchange for trade concessions.
How concerned are you about the United States losing technological supremacy to China in the near future?
Very or somewhat concerned: 68%

RON’S COMMENT: Losing technological supremacy to China seems to have a lot of juice as a presidential campaign issue. Expect to hear more about this on the campaign trail.
INFRASTRUCTURE PRIORITIES

Oppose: 12%

Oppose: 35%
