Trump Escalates Attacks of Representative Omar, Fellow Democrats Back Her

President Donald Trump cannot seem to stop his attacks of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American, who on Sunday issued a statement saying that a recent tweet of his has resulted in an increased number of death threats against her.

Just hours after Omar issued the statement, Trump took to Twitter to say that the congresswoman was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s “leader.”

“Before Nancy, who has lost all control of Congress and is getting nothing done, decides to defend her leader, Rep. Omar, she should look at the anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and ungrateful U.S. HATE statements Omar has made,” Trump tweeted. “She is out of control, except for her control of Nancy!”

ABC News writes that the President’s latest tweet aimed at Omar came shortly before he visited Minnesota to talk about taxes. The congresswoman, who represents the state’s 5th congressional district, commented on Trump’s visit in a tweet of her own, writing, “The Great State of Minnesota, where we don’t only welcome immigrants, we send them to Washington.”

Democrats, some of whom have been critical of Omar for her comments construed as anti-Semitic, stood in defense of their colleague after President Trump tweeted a video containing Omar’s comments about 9/11 made during a CAIR speech last month.

“There have been occasions when she’s made comments that she’s apologized for that were inartful or that were taken as anti-Semitic. This was certainly not one of them,” Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chairwoman Karen Bass told reporters Monday.

Democratic Representative Marcia Fudge also backed Omar, saying that what the congresswoman said was absolutely true, “that after the attack on 9/11, Muslims were treated horribly in this country.”

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson blasted Trump for his tweets, pointing out that “he is really putting the congresswoman’s life at risk.”
