LUNCHTIME POLITICS: Candidate Age – New York City Politics – Trump vs. Generic Dem

Your Daily Polling Update for Friday, April 5, 2019

TRUMP JOB APPROVAL: AVERAGE 45%
Up 1 from yesterday

RON’S COMMENT: Today’s average is based on four polls, ranging from 42% (Reuters, Politico-Morning Consult) to 51% (Rasmussen). The fourth poll had it at 43%…. President Trump’s disapproval rating averages 52% today (same as yesterday), which is 7 points higher than his approval rating.

TRUMP VS. GENERIC DEMOCRAT
Among voters nationwide

If the election for president were held today with Donald Trump as the Republican running against a Democratic Party candidate, who would you vote for?

The Democratic candidate: 48%
Donald Trump: 37%
It depends: 12%
I would not vote: 3%

RON’S COMMENT: Over the past two weeks, there has been a slight move away from Trump in this poll––with Trump sliding from 38% to 37% and the Democrat moving up from 47% to 48%. This provides additional evidence that release of the AG’s summary of the Mueller report has not been as helpful to the president’s political standing as many thought it would be, at least in the short term.

CANDIDATE AGE
Among voters nationwide

Older candidatesIf elected president in 2020, several candidates would be 80 years old or older while president. Do you think being 80 years old or older might make it too difficult to do the work the presidency requires, or do you think age helps candidates to have the experience and wisdom to do a good job as president?

Too difficult to do the work the presidency requires: 40%
Age helps candidates to have the experience and wisdom to do a good job as president: 36%
Not sure: 24%

Younger candidatesIf elected president in 2020, several candidates would begin his or her term before reaching 40 years old. Do you think a candidate being under 40 years old might make the candidate too inexperienced to do the work the presidency requires, or do you think the candidate’s age helps him or her to have the fresh new ideas to do a good job as president?

Too inexperienced to do the work the presidency requires: 32%
Age helps candidates to have the fresh new ideas to do a good job as president: 42%
Not sure: 26%

RON’S COMMENT: More voters have reservations about having an 80-year-old president than a 40-year old (40% vs. 32%)…. One could challenge the poll question wording on the basis that it should have referred to both candidate age groups at the time of being elected or at the time they take office (mid-to-late 30s vs. mid-to-late 70s). The clunky wording they used may have biased answers.
