House Speaker Nancy Pelosi once again reiterated her stance that pursuing presidential impeachment would be a waste of time without the support of the GOP.
She noted in an interview that a number of progressive Democrats have “wanted to impeach the President since the day he got elected,” and stressed that they need to focus on legislation they campaigned on in 2018 instead.
“You’re wasting your time unless the evidence is so conclusive that the Republicans will understand. Otherwise, it’s a gift to the President. We take our eye off the ball,” Pelosi noted during the interview with USA Today.
Her comments were a reiteration of previous ones when she also said that impeaching the President was “just not worth it” without Republican support.
“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it,” Pelosi said in a different interview.
On Thursday, she also said that she has held this view for a long time and expressed it repeatedly over the past few months.
The Hill writes that Democratic Representative Al Green pushed back against the speaker’s comments, saying that “if we wait on Republicans who are not going to buy in, then there won’t be any impeachment.”
He has been calling for impeachment for some time now and recently he vowed to force another House floor vote to impeach President Donald Trump.
Billionaire Tom Steyer has led a campaign to impeach Trump and his group Need to Impeach, has aired television ads and held town halls to pressure Democrats on the issue.
“Speaker Pelosi thinks ‘he’s just not worth it?’ Well, is defending our legal system ‘worth it?’ Is holding the President accountable for his crimes and cover-ups ‘worth it?’ Is doing what’s right ‘worth it?’ Or shall America just stop fighting for our principles and do what’s politically convenient?” Steyer said last week.
