Democratic Representative Bill Pascrell said Tuesday that House Democrats would most likely request the President’s tax returns from the Treasury Department within a couple of weeks.
“My prediction would be the next couple of weeks,” Pascrell, a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, told reporters, stressing that he has not been told a specific timetable, but is rather making a prediction based on his personal opinion.
Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal said Tuesday that he would make the request “when the case is ready.”
“I think that we’re doing the due diligence,” he also noted.
Democrats have expressed their interest in obtaining President Donald Trump’s tax returns in order to learn more about any possible conflicts of interest he may have.
President Trump broke with tradition when he took office by refusing to make public his tax returns, citing an IRS audit, although the IRS said that did not prevent him from releasing his returns.
Neal has the legal authority to request the President’s, as well as any other person’s, tax returns from the Treasury Department. Neil has noted publicly that he wants to build a case before making the request, which judging by Pascrell’s prediction could come soon.
The representative said that Neal would likely request 10 years of tax returns, starting by just requesting Trump’s personal tax returns and later seek his business tax returns.
“The letter will reflect research, talking with attorneys and the other resource people that we have,” Pascrell noted. “It’s a smart way, and I think we’re on the right path,” he added, referring to Neal’s careful and methodical approach.
Republicans, on the other hand, have insisted the effort to obtain President Trump’s tax returns is entirely political and amounts to an invasion of privacy, making clear they will fight the attempt by Democrats to do so.
