Lawmakers Blast Trump for SOTU Comments About ‘Partisan Investigations’

Congressional Democrats criticized President Donald Trump over his comments that “ridiculous partisan investigations” threatened the economic progress made by his administration.

Trump made the remarks during his State of the Union speech, after praising his administration for the “economic miracle” happening in the U.S.

“An economic miracle is taking place in the United States — and the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan investigations,” he said. “If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. It just doesn’t work that way!”

Although the President did not mention any investigation in particular, Democrats interpreted the comments as an attempt to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

“The President should not be attempting to undermine the Special Counsel’s investigation during the #SOTU,” Representative Salud Carbajal wrote on Twitter. “Mueller’s investigation must be allowed to continue without obstruction.”

His comments were echoed by Democratic Representative Steve Cohen, the chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee, who also took to Twitter to point to the recently launched investigation into Trump’s inaugural committee.

“Not partisan investigations. It’s #Mueller, a Republican, the southern district of New York, Republican, [and eastern] district of Virginia, Republican. #TrumpRussia #TrumpLies,” he tweeted.

A number of other lawmakers also slammed the President for making the comment.

“Protecting the Mueller investigation is a bipartisan issue. We will protect the investigation so truth can come to light,” Representative Donald Payne’s tweet read.

“There’s nothing ridiculous about investigating crimes, Mr. President. No one, not even you, is above the law. Mueller’s investigation must be completed without obstruction. Every American deserves the truth,” said Representative Lois Frankel.

Other Congressional Democrats were quick to follow, stressing that Mueller’s investigation must continue unobstructed, but also pointing to issues that President Trump failed to address during his speech.

Senator Tammy Duckworth wrote on Twitter that Trump “missed a critical opportunity to present credible solutions to some of the serious challenges facing our country, like our crumbling infrastructure & rising health care costs.”

Others criticized Trump on his environmental policy and constant attacks on Democrats, which do not allow for unity and working together toward achieving important goals.
