George Conway, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, stated on Sunday that it would be “insane” if President Donald Trump did talk to his former lawyer Michael Cohen about his congressional testimony before it happened.
Conway’s remarks came after Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani said on CNN that Trump might have discussed Cohen’s testimony with him, calling that “perfectly normal.”
“‘Perfectly normal?'” Conway wrote, responding to Giuliani’s comments. “It’s perfectly insane for witnesses in or subjects of a criminal investigation to be discussing testimony.”
Giuliani spoke on the Sunday cable news circuit following a blockbuster report from BuzzFeed News, which indicated Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress about a deal to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.
The Hill reports that that special counsel Robert Mueller’s office had evidence to prove the claim, but the special counsel’s office disputed the accuracy of the story. The special counsel’s office has not clarified what in the story was inaccurate, and Buzzfeed has said multiple times that they stand by the story.
Giuliani, during a separate appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, said that he is “100 percent certain” Trump never once asked Cohen to do anything but tell the truth to Congress.
“Leave it to Rudy to destroy the momentary respite that BuzzFeed had given his client,” Conway wrote amid Giuliani’s appearances.
Cohen pleaded guilty in November to lying to Congress about plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, signing a plea deal with Mueller’s office. Cohen said he was lying when he told Congress in an August 2017 letter that “the Moscow Project ended in January 2016,” before the Iowa caucuses. According to Cohen, discussions on the project were still happening in June 2016.
