A new poll conducted by CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom shows that two-thirds of Republican voters in Iowa would support the President in the general election if it were held today. Almost as many, however, welcome challengers to President Donald Trump to Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses due to take place in 2020.
The President earned the approval of 81% of respondents in the poll and a 77% favorability rating, with a majority of Iowa’s registered Republican voters approving of his choices on immigration, judicial appointments, tax cuts, tariffs and even the decision to fire his attorney general. Over half of the voters (54%) also put the blame for the GOP’s midterm losses on congressional Republicans rather than on the President (24%).
However, one topic on which 72% of Iowa’s Republican voters were critical of Trump was his use of Twitter. They believe the President’s posting of inflammatory messages on the platform is a mistake. On each other issue tested in the survey, the majority of respondents say President Trump made a good move, CNN writes.
As for whom they would vote, 67% of Republican voters in Iowa said they would like to have the President re-elected, 19% would consider someone else and 10% would definitely vote for someone else. One quarter further said the Republican party should not encourage challengers to the President, while 63% say otherwise.
But they are more open to welcoming challengers not critical of Trump. Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Florida Senator Marco Rubio and soon-to-be Utah Senator Mitt Romney, all of whom have publicly supported the President, have more favorable ratings in the poll.
The poll was carried out by Selzer and Co. from December 10 through 13 among a random sample of 450 registered Republican voters. Results for the sample of Republican voters have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.
