Newsom Won California Governor Race

Democrat Gavin Newsom, currently California’s lieutenant governor, won the race to become the state’s next governor.

Newsom defeated Republican businessman John Cox to replace outgoing Governor Jerry Brown.

Newsom was expected to easily win in deep-blue California and had a lead in the polls throughout the race.

Republicans still tried to take the governor’s mansion by turning out GOP voters opposed to a gas tax increase in California. The state’s ballot featured a proposition that would repeal the increase.

Newsom, 51, former mayor of San Francisco, has promised to work toward universal preschool and a single-payer healthcare system.
