Iran’s FM Responds to Washington: Latest Sanctions Target Sunken Ship

Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif responded to the re-imposed U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic, saying that the Trump administration is targeting a sunken ship and a bank that was shuttered years ago.

Zarif slammed Washington calling their latest move a “desperate PSYOP [psychological operation],” and adding that the list of Iranian entities that are affected by sanctions had been padded with at least two defunct targets.

“The U.S. designated a bank that was closed 6 years ago, and a ship that sank last year in a widely televised saga,” Zarif said in a tweet.“U.S. bullying is backfiring.”

Arguing that the nuclear agreement is “important,” the minister said that “the world can’t allow Trump & Co. to destroy global order.” He also added: “The U.S.—& not Iran—is isolated,” Zarif tweeted.

However, Zarif did not say specifically which “sunken ship” he was referring to. The latest sanctions target over 50 banks in Iran as well as their foreign and domestic subsidiaries.

One of the sanctioned entities is the subsidiary of Iran’s Mir bank in Russia has been included in the latest United States sanction list. Treasury published the full sanctions list for Iran on Monday.

The sole shareholder of the Moscow-based bank is the Iranian bank Melli (BMI), which has been included in the U.S. sanctions list. Among them, in addition to the Moscow World Business Bank, were Bank Kargoshaee, Melli Bank PLC, Behshahr Industrial Development Corp., Melli International Building & Industry Company and others, Russian media reported.
