Special counsel Robert Mueller is speculated to be nearing the end of his Russia investigation, even though sources say he has not been given an exact date by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein by which he is to wrap the investigation up.
Rosenstein, who oversees the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, has not set an exact date for the probe to be completed, but some speculate that Mueller may very well wrap up the investigation by the end of this year.
Sources within the Justice Department said rumors that the probe might come to an end immediately after the November midterm elections were false.
“Mueller and his team have to provide a confidential report to Rosenstein at the end of the investigation,” one of the sources said, according to CNN. “As far as timing, the investigation is obviously ongoing, and I’d expect it to continue well after the midterms.”
The deputy attorney general himself declined to say when the Russia investigation could be completed, although he stressed it was “appropriate and independent.”
Among the factors influencing the probe’s end is the discussion about whether President Donald Trump should sit down for an interview regarding possible obstruction of justice concerning the President’s firing of FBI Director James Comey. Another factor hindering the probe’s completion is the fact that Trump’s legal team has not yet provided written answers to Mueller’s questions.
The special counsel’s probe has so far resulted in four guilty pleas from former associates of President Trump’s. Nonetheless, Trump himself has often referred to the investigation as “a witch hunt” and a waste of taxpayer’s money.
The source rejected claims that the special counsel is under pressure to deliver additional indictments or “shut down” his investigation.
