A police officer from Maryland has been arrested and charged with raping a woman during a traffic stop.
According to NBC4 Washington, Chief Hank Stawinski said that Prince George’s County officer Ryan Macklin was arrested on charges of rape and assault.
The victim accused Macklin, a six-year veteran on the force, of pulling her over at about 1 a.m. last week and later forcing her to perform a sex act in her car in a nearby parking lot. The news station cited unnamed sources saying the alleged victim is undocumented.
“The charges against this officer are highly troubling,” Stawinski said. “Officers take an oath to protect others, not to abuse their authority in order to victimize someone.”
Officer Macklin was suspended without pay and has been stripped of his gun, badge and marked cruiser, according to NBC4.
However, Stawinski said police do not believe the officer targeted the woman because of her immigration status.
Police are looking into whether the officer may have assaulted more than one person, NBC reported.
