FBI Kavanaugh Probe Not Broad Enough, Accusers’ Lawyers Say

Lawyers for the two women who accused Trump’s nominee judge for the Supreme Court for sexual assault stated that the FBI is not doing broad enough probe of their claims, even as the bureau has been granted broader authority for its investigation, Bloomberg informed.

Christine Blasey Ford’s lawyers said that it is “inconceivable” that the FBI could do a thorough investigation without doing an interview with her or the witnesses she said that support her claims. Deborah Ramirez’s attorney said that the FBI apparently has not made contact with any of the 20 witnesses to her claim.

“We have great concern that the FBI is not conducting — or not being permitted to conduct — a serious investigation,” Ramirez lawyer John Clune wrote on Twitter.

Ford’s attorneys also said they have received no response, although they sent an offer to the FBI for interviewing Ford, and sent information about the witnesses and some evidence that may help the probe.

The White House on Monday decided to allow the FBI to question more people related to the case where Kavanaugh is accused of sexually abusive behavior toward women. However, the bureau has still not broadened the probe and has not obtained information on the nominee’s alcohol use or whether he falsely testified to the Senate committee, according to the person familiar with the matter.

Head of the Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley issued a statement in which he claims that FBI knows how to conduct a background investigation and should not give in to “politicians telling the agency how to do its job.”

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump told reporters, “I think Judge Kavanaugh is going to be accepted, but we’re going to have to see what comes back.”

The Senate will not vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination until after the FBI completes its one-week probe into allegations of sexual assault, according to the second-ranking Republican John Cornyn. Kavanaugh has strongly rejected all the allegations for sexual misconduct.
