The company set up by the President’s former lawyer Michael Cohen offered yesterday to drop the Stormy Daniels’ hush-money agreement and its planned lawsuit of $20 million against the adult-film star who had allegedly violated the agreement.
Essential Consultants, the company in question, said it wanted the porn actress to repay the $130,000 she was paid as part of the nondisclosure agreement in order to keep quiet about an alleged affair she had with Donald Trump, according to a letter included in a Friday night court filing.
“Today, Essential Consultants LLC and Michael Cohen have effectively put an end to the lawsuits filed against them by Stephanie Clifford aka Stormy Daniels,” said Brent Blakely, Cohen’s lawyer. “The rescission of the Confidential Settlement Agreement will result in Ms. Clifford returning to Essential Consultants the $130,000 she received in consideration, as required by California law.”
Cohen’s shell company agreed to rescind Daniels’ agreement and not sue her because, as a source says, Cohen no longer benefits from Daniels remaining silent. She has already talked publicly about her alleged affair with the President, describing her version of events.
Daniels’ attorney Michael Avenatti said for CNN that he only received the news of the filing before going on air so he hadn’t had time “to digest it.”
“I just saw it on my email literally right before I came on,” he said. “What they’re trying to do is they don’t want me to get a chance to depose Michael Cohen and Donald Trump. This is a hail Mary to try and avoid that, that’s my first guess,” Avenatti added.
Fox News writes that Daniels’ lawyer has vowed to compel Trump to provide testimony under oath in the case, but Friday night’s development could hinder should a judge dismiss the porn star’s case. Avenatti further added that he would not accept the offer and settle the case without deposing the President.
